WHO BENEFITS FROM A CHEMICAL PEEL?

Patients who are suffering from acne blemishes or who have pigmentary disorders usually benefit most from chemical peeling. At ADAS - Associates in Dermatology and Aesthetic Surgery, there are various types of peel that we use to achieve great cosmetic results. These include the Beta Lift™ Peel, Vitalize Peel™, TCA Peel™, and Glycolic Acid Peel™. Many patients who live in Jacksonville, Fleming Island and Ponte Vedra Beach benefit from these procedures

WHAT IS THE FORMULATION FOR THESE PEELS AND HOW ARE THEY USED?

The precise formula used may be adjusted to meet each patient's needs. For example, Tricholoracetic Acid is a medium depth peel, which can eliminate brown spots and help to even out textural irregularities on the face and neck. Downtime from TCA peels is usually 7 days. Glycolic Acid peels are often performed as a lunchtime peel. These are excellent peels to treat mask of pregnancy and fine wrinkling. Finally beta-hydroxy-acid peels are used to remove blackheads and whiteheads. These are wonderful peels for our teen-age patients and can be combined with an acne facial where extractions are performed or microdermabrasion. For effective post peel camouflage, we encourage the use of Jane Iredale™ makeup to help with healing and to minimize redness.

In summary, chemical peels can treat:

* Mechanical Acne
* Fine Lines and Wrinkles
* Acne Scarring
* Aging Skin
* Brown Age Spots

ARE THERE OTHER PROCEDURES, WHICH CAN BE USED SIMULTANEOUSLY WITH CHEMICAL PEELS?

Yes, at our practice we often perform Botox Cosmetic™ treatments or filler treatments to reduce fine lines around the forehead, cheek, eye, and lip areas. Complimentary procedures will enhance your overall cosmetic results. Fractional "Dot" CO2, Photodynamic Therapy or Fraxel (re:store)™ laser can also be used to reduce acne scars and/ or treat unwanted blood vessels. Downtime is nominal and patients are appreciative that they can receive their treatments in one or two sessions.

WHAT ARE THE PRE CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHEMICAL PEELING

Typically, we ask that you discontinue the use of retinoic acid products and glycolic acid products for 3 to 4 days before your chemical. In addition, we will prescribe an antiviral medication which is taken 1 day before your procedure. It is also wise to stay out of intense sunlight for up to 1 week prior to your treatment.

HOW MUCH DISCOMFORT CAN I EXPECT?

There is minimal if any discomfort with this treatment. A topical anesthetic is all that is used. This is applied for 30 to 60 minutes on the treatment area(s). If you are anxious, we can prescribe and anti-anxiety medication regimen which can be taken 1 to 2 hours before your procedure. Someone must drive you to and from the office if this regimen is prescribed. Pain usually is described as a moderate sunburn, which can easily be controlled with ice and medications such as Motrin™ or Advil™.

HOW LONG WILL I STAY RED?

There can be some minor redness and peeling of the skin. This quickly disappears within a matter of days. Redness can persist for up to one week. TCA peeling takes about a week to heal.

WHAT ABOUT POST OP CARE?

We recommend a very nice after skin care system. It is important to stay out of intense sun for at least one week after your treatment. We also recommend that you initiate a low dose corticosteroid medication to minimize swelling which occurs in most instances. Concealing makeup, e.g. Jane Iredale™, can be used to minimize redness.

HOW LONG WILL THE EFFECTS OF THE TREATMENT LAST?

The benefits from chemical peeling can be seen for months. Repeat treatments are sometimes required but this is determined on a case by case basis. In our experience, patient satisfaction has been extremely high for this procedure.
